Today, in order to stay with tradition, we had a barbecue picnic to celebrate the 4th. It was not a completely normal barbecue but we had a really good time. Jared and been to an island that is only about a 20 minute taxi ride from our home and has been wanting to take us there for weeks. This seemed like a good opportunity. Last night we put together stuff for burgers, made a pasta salad, and packed up chips and a watermelon. (Oh, and I had made a special fourth of July cake. My first attempt at making the powdered sugar for the frosting was successful, somewhat. Josiah was extremely excited about it.) This morning at 10:00 we got ourselves, the food, a change of clothes for Josiah, and Jacob's booster seat in a taxi and headed to the ferry landing. Jared exchanged numbers with the taxi driver and set it up for him to come back to pick us up later, when we called him. Once on the island, we headed to a covered area that was completely void of other people, a pleasant surprise. While Jared and a friend lit the barbecue, one we rented on the island, Josiah, Jacob and I explored. Josiah found a frog, a slug, lots and lots of bugs and spiders, and many "really big" sticks. The best part of it was that he got to run and run and run! Visitors came over, from time to time, from a more crowded area of the island. They would come over ask how old the boys were, if they both belonged to me, where we were from, take pictures, etc. After our feast and some more exploring, we left the island at 1:30 and headed home for naps. The boys slept so well this afternoon, after their eventful and joyful morning. I ended up waking up Josiah at 5:00, and he woke up talking about bugs. I have a feeling we are going to have many requests to head back to the island!
Josiah exploring a path near where we ate.
Watermelon, a fourth of July staple. Jared is barbecuing in the background.
I absolutely love this picture of Jacob. No wonder Jacob gets so much attention. He also is enjoying watermelon, in his little net bag thing. A little less messy, if watermelon can ever not be messy.
Family shot. Of course Josiah is holding a stick, I am sure he wishes you could see just how big it is!
